No Crank vs. Cranks but Won't Start: What the Symptom Means

Describing exactly what happens when you turn the key or press the start button can shorten the diagnostic path. "It will not start" can mean the engine does not move, turns slowly, cranks normally without running, or starts and immediately stalls.

No crank or slow crank

If the engine does not turn, clicks once, clicks repeatedly, or turns very slowly, testing often begins with the battery, terminals, cables, grounds, starter circuit, relays, and control signals. Dash lights alone do not prove the battery can supply cranking current.

Cranks normally but will not run

Normal cranking shifts attention toward fuel delivery, ignition, sensors, security authorization, wiring, and engine-control inputs. That is why replacing the starter based only on the phrase "won't start" can miss the actual fault.
